MARIAH CAREY - CAREY OWES HER FAME TO HER FAIRY GODSISTER: "MARIAH CAREY owes her career to 1980s hitmaker BRENDA K STARR - because she not only gave the pop star a job as her backing singer, she also made her look like a million dollars.

Starr became like an older sister to Carey, paying for her clothes and food, and turned her into an overnight Cinderella figure when she invited her to a 1988 industry party.

Starr recalls, 'I said, 'Listen, I'm going to this party tonight, do you wanna come with me because there's gonna be a lot of people in the industry there. Just bring your demo and I'll pass it on.''

Carey admits she was thrilled, but had nothing to wear: 'I said OK. I borrowed a dress from her, I borrowed everything. The only thing that didn't fit were the shoes.'

The singer met movie mogul and future husband TOMMY MOTTOLA at the party, who was smitten by her and promised to listen to her demo.

But when Mottola returned to the party hours later, after checking out the singer's demo is his car on the way home, Starrand Carey were gone.

Carey says, 'We were gone. It's very Cinderella.'"

IOL: Carey delving into children's fiction: "Mariah Carey is taking on Madonna - at the bookstores - by becoming a children's fiction writer.

The 35-year-old diva has announced plans to publish a series of illustrated children's books entitled 'Automatic Princess'.

The books are to be based on the stories of her own childhood experience as the daughter of a mixed race marriage.

The series will explore the journey of a bi-racial orphan girl.

The singer is currently celebrating a US No.1 album with her latest 'The Emanicipation of Mimi'.

The diva said although she lived in the lap of luxury the relationship was emotionally abusive.

She added in an interview with Britain's Essence magazine: 'I was in a beautiful house, surrounded by beautiful things, but I couldn't be who I really was."

Or at least that's the promise of ``The Emancipation of Mimi,'' the erratic songbird's new CD, in stores today.
``For the first time in my life I am proud and unafraid to be who I really am . . .,'' Carey, 35, claims in a press release. ``By naming my album `The Emancipation of Mimi' and referencing Mimi, a nickname only used by those closest to me, I am inviting fans into my life.''
Sounds promising. And ``The Emancipation of Mimi'' is a more upbeat title than ``The Rehabilitation of Mimi,'' which is what Carey's career needs at this point.
From 1990 to 2000, she racked up an astounding 15 No. 1 singles on the way to becoming the best-selling female singer ever. Then came her disasterous 2001 film debut in ``Glitter'' and its flop soundtrack, followed in 2002 by the very lame ``Charmbracelet.'' The hits stopped coming and Carey went through a public meltdown that included posting suicidal messages on her Web site and babbling incoherently on MTV clad only in a skimpy T-shirt. "
